🎯 Firm and insurance. Firm is whichever of Edinburgh or Loughborough you want most after visiting. Insurance is Glasgow — two courses, one city, both with a genuine BBB floor. Adjustment no longer exists, so the firm choice has to be the one you actually want; there is no upgrading on results day.
⚙️ BEng vs MEng — worth knowing now. A BEng only partly meets the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer; an MEng meets it in full. Four of your five are BEng. Most universities let you transfer to the MEng after Year 1 or 2 if you are doing well — ask about this at every open day. It is the difference between chartered at 26 and chartered at 28 with a Master's to pay for.
🌏 Why accreditation matters for Asia. HKIE has reciprocal agreements with ICE, IMechE, IET and CIBSE — so a UK CEng converts to MHKIE and Registered Professional Engineer in Hong Kong. Your degree travels; an unaccredited one does not. Worth one question to UCL: is K224 JBM-accredited? Nobody has confirmed it.
Parallel Hong Kong — separate applications, does not touch UCAS
Direct to each university, decided on predicted grades, roughly HK$1,200 in total, and none of it uses a UCAS slot. As a HK permanent resident you are a local student — fees HK$49,500/yr instead of HK$224,000. You apply non-JUPAS, which is the local route for anyone without HKDSE.

📄 HKUST needs a "DTP" — and it is your NEA. A Design and Technology Project experience document describing the how, why and what of your projects. It is mandatory — no DTP, no consideration. Then a team design challenge and an interview conducted on that document, so everything in it has to be defensible out loud. Start writing it from the NEA now, not in November.

⚠️ Every HKU programme publishes AAA as its expected lower boundary. These are three well-chosen lottery tickets, not a plan — which is fine, because they cost HK$600 and one form. HKU Mechanical also carries a mandatory 12-credit year-long group design project in final year, and there is a Minor in Innovation and Design (product design, fabrication, CAM, robotics, 3D printing) you can bolt on that is not advertised anywhere.
📅 Both Hong Kong deadlines fall before the UCAS one. HKU opens 23 Sept, HKUST priority round closes 25 Nov, and UCAS equal consideration is not until 13 Jan. Do not let the UCAS date set the pace.
The actual job What decides all of this
📈 It is Maths, and it is not ability. Three diagnostic sessions found your methods are B-grade across ~25 topics, you picked up integration by substitution in one example having never been taught it, and the marks you lose go to careless slips — sign flips, miscopying, un-simplified final lines. The verdict was: "no evidence of a hard ceiling below an A." The barrier is consistency and accuracy, not capability.
🔍 Why the slips happen — and this is useful. Your Morrisby profile says you are a "global" learner: "you prefer to take an overall view of the situation… rather than concentrating on the details." That is a strength — you see the whole problem. It is also exactly why the sign gets dropped. Check line 1, and re-check every substitution and every copied sign. That single habit is worth a grade.
📅 The September mocks are the application. They set your predicted grades, and UCAS is explicit that predictions cannot be changed once the application is submitted. Not practice — the real thing.
✍️ One paragraph, and only you can write it. 250 words on the NEA: the problem, what your first prototype got wrong and why, what you changed. Not "it broke" — "the hinge fouled the housing past 40 degrees." Almost every applicant writes about a project that worked; hardly anyone writes about the one that did not. It is reusable in the UCAS statement, the HKU statement and the HKUST DTP — three applications, one piece of writing.
